Châtelaine

In the Middle Ages, the "Châtelain" was the commander of the castle. The feminine form, "Châtelaine" was the woman who supervised its daily function and kept the keys. She was often in charge of hospitality to any guests.

We in the SCA use the term "Châtelaine" to refer to the officer who assists newcomers in our society to find what interests them and to settle in. They also loan costumes and gear as needed. Sometimes the term "Hospitaller" is used instead of Chatelaine.

The Honorable Eve Stoneheart, The Wagand is our Châtelaine and can be contacted at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
